I need to create some documents in the PDF format. I looked at Adobe Acrobat Professional. It is simply too costly for me. Could you please tell me some way to be able to generate generate documents in PDF format for free? I use Windows XP Professional.

There are quite a few free PDF conversion tools that exist around. My personal favorite was CutePDF. I recently came across another one which seems like a good one and that is PrimoPDF (Thanks to Hemant for that tip).

If you want total control over typesetting of the document, I strongly recommend using a LaTeX tool. My personal favourite being MiKTeX. It is a command line tool. There are a bunch of free GPL IDE’s that are available that will use these tools. You can use TeXnicCenter or Texmaker. I recommend installing MiKTeX before installing any IDE for it. To learn/refer to standard examples for LaTeX, you may want to refer to the free LaTeX wikibook.

    I’ll suggest instead of using Microsoft Word you can try Open Office which they will let you save the file as PDF file… and they’re free to download…

    Don’t you think that’s great?

    @Jen:
    Latex is really useful for typesetting large documents like books, magazines etc.
