I have a problem with my Toshiba laptop. It has Windows XP installed on it. I want to format it and install everything again but at the command prompt I always get an error message saying that the volume is in use?

You must boot using a boot disk and format from there. Also, you can boot using the disc of operating system you want to install. When trying to install the operating system, you should get an option to format the existing drive/partition. You can format it there and install the new operating system easily.

Just insert the Windows CD you have got and it will format it for you and re-install the windows.

I have the same problem. I have tried to use the restall disk, but unlike other times I have used it it will not be recognised by the laptop. It cannot be opened or explored, yet can be on other laptops.

I do not get the option to boot from CDROM with the disk in, but do when I have another disk in the tray.

    Any help?
