Labeling discs using ‘Lightscribe’
January 30th, 2007I have a DVD writer that supports the Lightscribe technology. I am trying to use Nero 6 to label my discs using this technology, but I get an error saying ‘No disc found’. Please Help.
- Anie
Please ensure that you have inserted the disc upside down, that is, reverse of the way you normally insert it when burning data on it. You also need to make sure that the disc you are using is a Lightscribe compatible disc.
How can I burn a DVD in a CD drive?
January 29th, 2007I don’t have a DVD burner but I do have a CD burner. I will like to know if it is possible to burn DVD’s using my CD burner. If it is possible, then please tell me which software do I need to do that.
- Poonam
It is not possible for you to burn a DVD in a CD writer. You will have to buy a DVD burner for the same. Further, the DVD is backwards compatible with CD, which means a DVD drive can burn a CD, but the CD drive is not forward compatible and you cannot use it to read/ write DVD’s. The laser device present in the DVD writer is different from the one present in the CD writer.
How to change the location of downloaded files in Google Talk?
January 28th, 2007I use GTalk regularly. I wish to change the location of the files that are downloaded to some location other than C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Google Talk Received Files. How can I change it?
- Devanshu
The current version of Google Talk (GTalk) does not allow you to modify that path where it saves the received files. The files get saved to ‘Google Talk Received Files‘ inside your ‘My Documents‘ folder.
However, one possible solution is to use TweakUI to change the location of your ‘My Documents‘ folder and hence the location where the files get downloaded.
How to create a desktop shortcut that opens Firefox to a specified URL?
January 28th, 2007I have created a shortcut on the desktop for my son to access his favorite website. The problem is that Windows is not opening Firefox like it is supposed to. Upon double-clicking the shortcut, Windows informs me that there is no program associated with the file. I have gone into “Folder Options -> File Types” and associated .url extension with the command line that opens Firefox. Am I missing something?
All I want to do, ultimately, is to create an icon on my desktop that my son can click on to get to his favorite website.
- Mike
Follow the following steps:-
- Click on the Start button and navigate to the place in the Start menu that has Firefox. But instead of clicking on it, hold down CTRL and drag the Firefox onto your desktop. This will create a shortcut to Firefox.
- Test the shortcut by double clicking on it. It will bring you to the normal default start page in Firefox. Close Firefox.
- Now right click on the shortcut and select Properties. One of the properties is the “target” which will end with firefox.exe”
- Add a space after this, then put the URL that you want to go to in Firefox, for example http://www.jkg.in/
- Click OK to end the properties window and test the shortcut.
Unable to enable Windows Vista’s Aero Interface?
January 28th, 2007I installed the Windows Vista and activated it. Everything is fine. The problem is I am unable to enable the Windows Aero/glass looks. I read in many forums online and they suggested to make a key in the registry. I did it but its of no use. I got Vista just for its Aero interface.

I’d first suggest you to check if your machine is Windows Vista capable. This will ensure if we meet all the requirements and it will also tell you any problems and their solutions. If the tool doesn’t find any problem and you still get the problem, leave a comment below and I will work with you to figure out the cause and the solution for the same.
How to create PDF for free in Windows XP?
January 20th, 2007I need to create some documents in the PDF format. I looked at Adobe Acrobat Professional. It is simply too costly for me. Could you please tell me some way to be able to generate generate documents in PDF format for free? I use Windows XP Professional.
- Anish
There are quite a few free PDF conversion tools that exist around. My personal favorite was CutePDF. I recently came across another one which seems like a good one and that is PrimoPDF (Thanks to Hemant for that tip).
If you want total control over typesetting of the document, I strongly recommend using a LaTeX tool. My personal favourite being MiKTeX. It is a command line tool. There are a bunch of free GPL IDE’s that are available that will use these tools. You can use TeXnicCenter or Texmaker. I recommend installing MiKTeX before installing any IDE for it. To learn/refer to standard examples for LaTeX, you may want to refer to the free LaTeX wikibook.
Machine beeps continously on boot, unable to go futher
January 17th, 2007I have PIII at home. It beeps continuously on start up and i am not able to start it. Please suggest.
- Preeti
The machine has a faulty RAM or the RAM is loose. Open the cabinet of your machine, and pull the RAM and try plugging it again. If still it beeps, try your RAM on a friend’s machine and see if the RAM is faulty or the problem if with the slot for the RAM.
Volume is in use, unable to format
December 20th, 2006I have a problem with my Toshiba laptop. It has Windows XP installed on it. I want to format it and install everything again but at the command prompt I always get an error message saying that the volume is in use?
- Abdou
You must boot using a boot disk and format from there. Also, you can boot using the disc of operating system you want to install. When trying to install the operating system, you should get an option to format the existing drive/partition. You can format it there and install the new operating system easily.
